4Great for the value  Jan 09, 2007 By Tara "B's Wife"
I bought this to use as a stroller for two kids, and as a bike trailer in the summer. It is the middle of winter right now and my bike is in storage so I've only used this as a stroller so far. I put a 5 year old and a 1 year old in it (please note that even though I do it, I think the manufacturer reccomends that you do not use this product with very young children.) The kids enjoy having a broad range of view from inside with all the "windows" and they are comfortable riding in it. My one year old falls asleep in there and the five year old never complains. The InStep offers easy assembly, good sun and rain protection, and LOTS of pockets to store things.

On the down side, when it is used as a stroller it is very difficult to navigate it over sidewalk curbs. I found that I had to look for the 'ramps' at crosswalks, and where there were none, I had to either REALLY struggle to get it up on the sidewalk or else just walk in the street. This is likely due to the design of it; it is really made to be a bike trailer (the stroller mode is an added convenience) and if you were towing this trailer, rather than pushing it as a stroller, you'd likely be staying on the roads rather than the sidewalks.

All in all, I needed a good stroller/trailer combo that was priced right. I was satisfied with the quality and durability of the InStep when I got it. It looks like it will stand up to the use I will give it.

5Kids, Groceries, Easy on a Bike; Great Stroller on Uneven Ground  May 24, 2009 By GoneGreen
An EXCELLENT all-around bike trailer and stroller.

We have owned this model for at least three years, and have used it with a bike with our daughter since she was about 18 months. (She is four now.) We bought this unit to replace the two (2) copies of an older In-Step that we used when each of our other kids was younger.

All in all, it is an excellent trailer, rolls easily, almost like its not there when empty. Holds two kids easily, up to 100 lbs total. I have hauled a weeks groceries for a family of five (without any kids on board).

It has two pockets inside, and two cup holders, straps for two kids, or one kid in three positions (!) and extra cargo space in the back. Front and rear screens, closures, clear side windows and a rain / wind screen for the front make it comfortable in a wide range of weather. (In winter, our daughter bundles up and has a lap rob; in summer all the windows are open. . .

All trailers tend to "drive" the bike when full, much as a car trailer does, but it is not difficult to adjust.

As a stroller the front wheel protrudes and is a little awkward in a crowd. As a jogging stroller, and on rough ground the 20" bicycle wheels roll effortlessly. Indeed, the adjustable handlebar and easy rolling may spoil you for a standard trailer.

Our first trailers had a clamp to attach it to the bike frame; this version uses a special hitch, which at first seemed annoying. (We paid to get a second and third hitch for multiple bikes.) Now we LOVE the hitch as it does not damage the bike as the clamp did sometimes and has a very secure attachment point.

The canvas has a tendency to degrade in the sun after a while, first fading rapidly then weakening. Store it under cover. We have treated ours badly, and leave ours parked outdoors all day on a bike rack while our daughter is in daycare, and some years have just stored it in the backyard. As a result, the canvas has faded, and there are some seems separating. But for the price we paid and the amount of use it gets, it was a great value even if we have to buy a new one for next year.

NOTE: We went with this model over similar but cheaper ones in large part because the frame extends OUTSIDE the wheel. We tend to scrape posts (esp. on our gate) and other things, so the extra protection was worth it. At the same time, it was a tiny bit too wide to fit comfortably through our standard chain link fence gate.

We have a "One Less Car" bumper sticker on the side window; at the daycare kids are always asking their parents to get one for them! Frequently we have to stop and answers questions from parents. . . (grin).
